The Benefits of Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that has been embraced by more and more health enthusiasts these days. When swished around the mouth, the antibacterial properties of oil attract, like a magnet, bacteria and fungus, which may help alleviate inflammation, congestions and even allergies.

Oil pulling can help with:

Bad breath

Bleeding gums

Plaque

Sensitive teeth

Cavities

Gingivitis

Moistening the mouth, lips and throat

Ulcers

Kidney functions

Even though it might sound a bit complex or intimidating, oil pulling is actually one of the simplest self-care measures that you can take. It can also be inexpensive depending on the type of oil you choose.

Oil pulling instructions

Measure 1-2 teaspoons of oil and put it in your mouth. Coconut, sunflower, sesame or olive oil is recommended for best results. Use the highest quality oil possible as cold pressed organic virgin oils.

Swish-Swish and pull the oil between your teeth and around your mouth for about 5 to 20 minutes. Start small and grow every day as you become more comfortable with your new morning routine.

When you are ready, do not swallow the oil, because it will be full of bacteria and fungus and you do not want all that back in your system. Make sure you either spit it in a tissue and throw it in the garbage or you throw it in the toilet. The oil will clog your pipes so do not dispose of it in the sink.

Use a tongue scrapper to clean the surface of the tongue. This will help clearing leftover bacteria, improve the overall sensation and appearance of the tongue and reduce bad breath.

You can choose to rinse your mouth out with salted water or water mixed with a little apple cider vinegar to ensure that the oil is out of your mouth (*optional).

Brush your teeth to kill any bacterial remnants.

Smile in the mirror and thank yourself for taking time to take care of you! Self-care should be a very high priority for you. When you care for yourself deeply, you’re able to show up in the world as the best version of yourself.

What is the best oil for pulling?

There are several oils for pulling that are ideal to use. These include the traditionally used sesame oil and more modern options such as sunflower oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and palm oil. Of these options, many prefer coconut oil for oil pulling because of its antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Oil pulling with coconut oil has gained popularity because of the antimicrobial benefits of its lauric acid content. Some people prefer coconut oil because of its teeth whitening properties as well as the nice flavor.
